This 600 watt switchable HID ballast works perfectly with High Pressure Sodium (HPS) or Metal Halide (MH) grow lights.  It gives you the ability to pick the optimal lighting condition simply by using a different bulb, instead of having to care for two separate light systems. It utilize MH grow lights to speed up vegetative growth or convert to HPS grow lights to encourage flower and fruit production.
